Pilonidal cyst surgery
The procedure is performed in our clinic using a surgical technique based on minimally invasive principles. Pilonidal cysts, also known as sinus pilonidal disease, can present in two different forms and may require treatment at the same time.
In a mild, inflamed condition, the cyst over the sacrum becomes over-infected and a painful abscess develops, always requiring urgent surgical exploration.
This can usually be done under local anaesthesia in an outpatient setting.
The other presentation is a chronic condition, where small fistulae, sometimes secretory, sometimes with hair follicles, are seen in the midline above the sacrum and coccyx between the buttocks.
In such cases there is often a complex system of ducts under the skin.
This type of lesion is still widely excised in many hospitals and the wound is left open.
In all cases, this type of secondary wound healing is lengthy, lasting weeks or months, and can be associated with a lot of discomfort.
At the ProctoMed Center, we use a modern surgical technique based on minimally invasive principles, the so-called.
We use a minimally invasive surgical technique called pit picking.
During this procedure, the abnormal duct system is meticulously dissected out and excised without leaving a large scar.
Pit picking surgery can be complemented by laser treatment (SiLaC – Sinus Laser Closure).
This allows even the smallest passages to be well treated and closed with virtually no blood loss.
The procedure can even be performed under local anaesthesia.
After the operation, the patient can return to a near-normal lifestyle soon after surgery, and small wounds heal almost painlessly.
