Constipation
What do we mean by constipation?
Constipation is when bowel movements only occur 1-2 times a week, the process of defecation is difficult, or the stools are berry-like and small.
Occasional short periods of constipation are normal, but if this condition lasts for several weeks it is considered chronic.
What questions should I be prepared to ask if I go to the doctor with constipation?
Long-standing, abnormal distress can not only make life miserable, but can also be a symptom of more serious illnesses, so it is important to get it checked out.
If you see one of our specialists with constipation, you should be prepared with the following questions – you can prepare your answers to these questions on a piece of paper, even before the examination:
- How long have you been constipated?
- Has your lifestyle and eating habits changed?
- Do you consume enough fluids and fibre?
- Have you dieted recently?
- Do you exercise regularly?
- Are you taking a newly prescribed medicine?
- Do you have any other abdominal complaints?
- Did you see any blood or drool in your stool?
How is constipation investigated?
There are many ways to investigate the problem, most of which can be done at ProctoMed Center:
- physical examination;
- laboratory tests (blood sugar, serum levels of ions, thyroid hormones);
